Representative Projects
Six Mile Cypress Slough:
KLECE is implementing the initial phase of a Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Plan (LTEMP) written by Kevin Erwin in 2006 for the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and Lee County. Parameters measured within the 35 square miles watershed include hydropatterns (ground and surface water levels, hydroperiod and rainfall) water quality, vegetation, herpetofauna, macroinvertebrates and fish.
Lehigh Headwaters Initiative:
The 80,000 acre East County Water Control District (ECWCD) located in Lehigh Florida includes the headwaters of numerous streams and wetland sloughs including the Orange, Estero and Imperial rivers, Bedman and Hickey’s Creek and the Six Mile Cypress Slough. KLECE is providing ecological guidance on the development of a comprehensive plan to restore ground and surface water storage, baseflows and water quality to this region for the ECWCD and the SFWMD.
Florida Atlantic University:
KLECE has developed a wildlife habitat management plan for the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University. Located in Palm Beach County, the campus has almost 100 acres of preservation and conservation areas. The plan will provide wildlife corridors on and around the property.
Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems:
Since March of 1999 KLECE has been a member of the team developing the Gulfstream Natural Gas System in Florida. The pipeline begins in Mississippi and Alabama, crosses the Gulf of Mexico to South Tampa Bay; then crosses central and south Florida to end in Palm Beach County. Once completed, the 753 mile Gulfstream Natural Gas System will provide enough natural gas to supply 4.5 million Florida homes with electricity. KLECE provided the ecological services including wildlife and wetland surveys, permitting and construction monitoring.
The following four projects are mitigation and restoration sites we designed for the Gulfstream Natural Gas System project:
Lake Wales Forest Mitigation Site
Port Manatee Spoil Island Site
Manatee #1 Mitigation Site
Harbor Key Mitigation Site
Little Pine Island Mitigation Bank:
KLECE was instrumental in the design and permitting of the Little Pine Island Mitigation Bank, one of the first mitigation banks in the State of Florida permitted and endorsed by state and local agencies. The mitigation bank includes the entire 4,700 acre state owned Little Pine Island located within the Charlotte Harbor NEP in Lee County. The island historically supported a diversity of native habitats ranging from tidally influenced mangrove swamps and marshes to freshwater hydric pine flatwoods. KLECE conducted detailed ecological assessments of these habitats which revealed 1,400 acres of native habitat completely drained and displaced by exotic infestation.
Corkscrew Regional Mitigation Bank:
CRMB is the second mitigation bank project undertaken by KLECE for Mariner Properties Development, Inc. The 635 acres of wetland and upland restoration commenced Phase I in May 2005 and will continue through 2011.
Old Collier Golf Course:
Located in Collier County, Old Collier Golf Course is a professional course with over 200 acres of preserved and enhanced habitats, designed by Tom Fazio, permitted and managed by KLECE. Completed in 2002, this is the most recent of many golf course projects undertaken by KLECE.
The Town of Viera:
Since 1987, KLECE has been working with The Viera Company to develop a new town in Brevard County. Planning created more than 1,000 acres of wetland and upland preserves in and around several planned communities and a gold course.
Impacts of Phosphate Mining:
The firm has 25 years of experience evaluating the impacts of mining and the results of mine reclamation for the private sector, State of Florida and local governments.
Temperate Wetland Restoration Course (Level 1):
Since developing the course in 1996, Kevin Erwin has been the principal instructor for this introductory course in Ontario, Canada. The course focuses on watershed based, landscape level habitat restoration and has been supported by a consortium comprised of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada and Ducks Unlimited Canada. Over 260 environmental professionals have completed the one week course offered each spring.
Temperate Wetland Restoration Course (Level 2):
Since late 2004, Kevin Erwin has been working with graduates of the Level 1 course on a comprehensive effort to identify wetland and riparian restoration opportunities within and adjacent to CPAs 2 and 11 within the Oak Ridges Moraine located north of Toronto.
